Monday Made it 7/14/14

Wicked excited to link up with 4th Grade Frolics for my first Monday Made It!

I have been super busy since I got back from NY and have a ton to share!
I started with this cart from Big Lots for $28:

I took the shelves off and got two cans of black spray paint for $3.17 each (got me two coats on this project, another project and still have some left over.):

And this is what it looks like now!

I know there are black ones out there, but they would have cost me more than this project.
This next one came from wanting a new calendar for my classroom, but not being able to find one I liked and wasn't $93848324.

I started with a painter's canvas from Michael's and chalkboard spray paint. I got both with coupons so I spent $10:
 Krylon Chalkboard Paint, Black
I also got some washi tape from Office Depot:
Scotch Expressions Washi Tape 58 x
I took the canvas outside and did two coats of spray paint:
This is what it looked like inside all dry!
Then you have to prime it by rubbing chalk all over it and erasing. I did it three times to be safe.
Then you spend 293749823 hours trying to measure and put the tape down perfectly, ripping it up, cursing, then just deal with it beling close enough to perfect:
Finally I set it up for August!!

This was super cute and only cost $1:
I got the marbley-ish rock things from the Dollar Tree. Got out my pretty pink marker and wrote numbers for the kids. The clear nail polish on top to keep it from rubbing off! I will use these instead of popsicle sticks to call on randoms and what not.
This is kind of a 2fer.

The materials:
Hot glue gun/glue
Super cute buttons: (First pic from Hobby Lobby the second set from Joann, with coupons of course!)
Boring push pins:
Strange tools:

So of course these buttons have those annoying loopy things on the back.
So I used my strange tools to get them off! My nail clippers did most of the work and the scissors trimmed it up for me. (There are tools out there meant for this job, but this way was free)
Now they lay nice and flat! These are super cute buttons if I do say so myself!

Then I put a dab of hot glue on the thumbtack and stuck the button on top!

What have you made?

  1. I'm planning (hoping) to do my first Monday made it today too! Mine won't be near as crafty as yours. Love the idea of the glass marbles for selecting students!

  2. Love all of you projects! Was your black paint made to use on plastic? I painted some thing a couple of years ago and I had trouble with the paint chipping later in the year. Did you seal it? I have some things I would really like to paint.

    1. Thank you for your comment!

I went to Home Depot and the paint guy was super helpful!! This is the paint I used http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Painter-s-Touch-2X-12-oz-Gloss-Black-General-Purpose-Spray-Paint-6-Pack-249122/202071067?N=5yc1vZapz5.

The paint guy said if the plastic is flimsy it is likely to chip, just because that is how plastic is. I did not seal it, or really think about it, I am going to have to look into it now.

    1. Thank you! When I student taught my host teacher used rocks from the lake we lived on, but I am not there any more so I thought this would work for me!
